Herbert was born 7/08/1925 in Chatham, ON. He was the son of Mr. Guy and Mary Elizabeth Brown of Chatham Twsp., Kent Co. ON. Herbert is the brother of Tpr. Robert Joseph Brown (the CDN 27/10/44 reported Robert was in Belgium) and PO. Dean Russell, stationed at Shelburne NS. Herbert attended the Chatham Vocational School. He was a former member of the Chatham Daily News Advertising Department prior to enlisting.
As told to nephew, Brian Brown: My Uncle enlisted at 17 and eventually trained as a belly gunner. He participated on a medical mission flight to an area near Singapore in which they were to fly a doctor to an area near Singapore. The doctor was parachuted to the site, however, broke his ankle upon landing. The medic who was also on the flight was then parachuted in to aid the doctor, which caused the record in long flight time. F/O Donald Cottingham of Tilbury was also on this flight and neither of these men had met prior to this legendary flight. Herb had grown up on the family farm in Dover Township.
(CDN could have the wrong initial of Herbert – Should be M. as the same person than J.) It was reported that H. J. and Pte. Duncan Baxter were on a short furlouge and staying at his parents home on Princess St. North, Chatham, ON. from their duties at Niagara-on-the Lake where they returned in March, 1942. CDN 13/03/42

The CDN August, 1944 reported that PO Brown was visiting his parents in Chatham Twsp. before leaving for RCAF-Lachine, PQ.
Before going to England, he was stationed for some time with the RAF at Nassau, Bahamas as reported in the CDN 27/10/44 for operational training on bombers.
