The five Bird brothers Ellwood, Elmer, Harvey, Maurice and Max had a long connection to wars. Their father A. W. Bird was a veteran of the Great War, enlisting in the US Army – Heavy Artillery, his grandfather J. W. Bird served in the American Civil War  and his father J. W. Bird Jr. served in the Spanish American War.

Ellwood volunteered for service in the Pacific. CDN 9/08/45(P)
