Prior to the war Ray his parents three brothers and two sister were living at 136 Queen St., Chatham, ON. Buster attended Queen Mary Public School were he excelled in swimming, baseball and rugby. He moved on to Chatham Vocational School for one year before starting work at the Ontario Steel Plant in Chatham.

At age seventeen Ray enlisted 29/03/1944 in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve at Windsor, ON. as a Stoker 2nd Class, and was posted to Nova Scotia. While training at HMCS Cornwallis, the Navys training base at Digby, NS. and abord H.M.C.S. Buxton (an overaged WWI USN destroyer) he fall over-board at 23:58 hours from a harbor craft when returning to HMCS Buxton and drowned, his body was never found. Age: 18, LAS. Date of Death: 28/09/1944, “Missing presumed dead.
