Service # A116917, A9251

Born in Dover Twsp., Kent Co., ON. The son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bagnall of Concession 1, Dover Twsp. Married to Edith Pearl Johnston who died in 1936 re-married Marie Beatrice Bechard. Alberta Crow family.

Clifford saw service in Sicily and Italy. He was wounded two weeks after landing in Sicily from motor fire. He was evacuated to North Africa by a British medical unit. He had suffered a concussion, but after several months, he was back to fighting in Italy. Serving with the British Eighth Army, he had seen action in every engagement; including four months at Ortona. He was released July 30, 1944. He said the treatment he received in hospital was the very best.

Cpl. Bagnall was warmly greeted at home by his mother and their eleven year old son, John, and other friends after being away for five years. A gathering of family and friends met at Prairie Siding for a hearty welcome home. According to Cpl. Bagnell, coming home to a real home cooked meal was wonderful.

He was returned to Canada as a prisoner-of-war escort with 21 other Canadians from overseas. The CDN 13/09/44 reported that Cpl. C. M. Bagnall received the 1939-43 Star for his service in Italy.

Clifford Martin passed away 24 April, 1974. CDN-obit.
